Song of the week: Landslide, Fleetwood Mac

I was never a big fan of Fleetwood Mac when Fleetwood Mac was all one heard on the radio. Keep in mind-- I was exploring the world of punk music, so Fleetwood Mac did not exactly fit into my limited repertoire of audio delights back in the late 1970's. Radio was different back then. A song would stay in the Top 40 for weeks... same with albums. Rumours... oh my gosh... was on the charts for months and months... imagine hearing a Britney Spears song for months and months... it's bad enough if it is played for a few weeks... Landslide wasn't on Rumours-- it was actually on their white album or self titled album, Fleetwood Mac.

I've never been a huge Stevie Nicks fan--- or at least her vocals. It has only been within this past decade that I have grown to enjoy the music of Fleetwood Mac-- the 70's version of Fleetwood Mac...(still exploring the older blues influenced Peter Green days) and what I have grown to like and understand are Stevie's abilities as an incredible songwriter. The words to Landslide are quite powerful... as a twenty something she was looking out over the years to come... choices she was making in the moment-- the apprehension of making the right choices-- the insecurities of the unknown. Now, as you hear the words sung in recent years, some 30 years later... with age comes wisdom at least I hope that is the case. The song takes on a more melancholy meaning... reflection and recollection of choices made, maybe some regret-- those bittersweet moments in life that cause that lump in the back of your throat...

Ramble:

After three and half years, I am moving. This will be my last Sunday post here at this location. Starting next year I will be posting here. Please make a note of it and bookmark the new address. It's time. So, 2009 marks the beginning of "change", so I thought I would just go with it. The photo is mine-- it is a covered bridge up in Holmes County, Ohio-- I took the shot this past fall. I still don't have everything moved over that I want-- mainly my blogroll... what a pain in the toosh that is... really what happened to Blogroll? Dude just disappeared??

I hope you had a nice Christmas--- I can't believe it is over already... and we are just days away from another year... time is flying by... My oldest niece will not be with us on New Year's Eve... how strange that will be... It is a new chapter in her life and she is off spreading her wings... her mom and pop and Michael and I are saddened... We told her not to grow up, but she ignored us. I feel I should be with Peter Pan in Neverland and I'm going to take the rest of my nieces and nephews there to reside... Tuesday we are having my brother's oldest daughter over for a sleepover-- I'm going to do my best to convince her to not get any older--- Michael and I are really going to work hard to convince her boys have cooties and to always be ten years old... I'm just not ready for another one of my loves to grow up...

It was a strange week... so, no post today... besides, we have a ton of things to accomplish today so this needs to be short. Friday night Michael and I traveled up to Clifton Mill. We have wanted to go there for quite some time. The mill was built in 1802 by a Revolutionary War soldier--- it still stands and is still in operation. The buildings on the property are all original-- including this incredible log cabin. The 3,600,000 lights were spectacular. A computer synchronized light show was very cool. The miniature village was my favorite part... especially the Frisch's Big Boy and the Drive In Movie. One of the things we were looking forward to was seeing the Santa Claus Museum- The family collection of various antique Santa's... some dating back to the 1800's... All I can say... is although interesting... I was pretty creeped out... the volume of noise... all the creepy and dirty Kris Kringles.... and then... there was the "docent" that sat there silently... You'll see her in one of the quick videos I shot... So, to all those planning 2009 Halloween Haunted Houses... consider a Santa Room...

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God."

I have always likes George W. Bush and I am going to miss him when he leaves Washington in January. Older and with more gray hair than when he took the Office of President of the United States, he still holds the same convictions as the man I voted for 8 and 4 years ago.

He gave us tax cuts, he prevented federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, Justice Sam Alito, Chief Justice John Roberts.. He has stressed the importance of faith based and community initiatives. He has provided more relief to Africa than any other previous president. I have not always agreed with him, in fact, I have found myself frustrated at his liberal leanings. Yes.. liberal leanings... the compassionate conservative. But again, this is the same man I voted for twice and it is his compassion that has defined him as a man, as our President.

I'm going to miss Dubya... I'm going to miss the cowboy. I loved it when he dropped his "g's" you know-- Goin', Doin', etc...

However, the most important thing George W. Bush has done has kept us safe on our soil. We were not prepared for the events of September 11, 2001. At the time, I believe George Bush was on a trajectory to really follow his compassionate conservative values and he would have spent even more money (our tax dollars) developing more welfare systems. However, the events of that awful day changed everything. He knew what he had to do. He became our protector. He kept us safe and has done so every single solitary day since. As our President he has been given details that none of us need to know or could handle-- close calls and situations defused before anyone is hurt. Those days after 9/11, we all watched a man age by 10 years-- instantly.No longer did we live in a safe world and like any father, George Bush wanted to take the pain away and keep us safe--- He did not want to see us hurting--- he told us to go back to our lives, spend money, and get on with it. (It is only now, that he is second guessed by the President Elect). It was the best thing for us. Get back to normal... get over our fears of boarding a plane, spend money, get the economy going, however stay vigilant.. pay attention.

"I came to Washington with a set of values, and I'm leaving with the same set of values, and I darn sure wasn't going to sacrifice those values; that I was a president that had to make tough choices and was willing to make them." He has been our President and he has been ridiculed and mocked like no other (do a Google search for images and see what you find). He has put his country first, he follows his faith and convictions and he wants what is best for this nation. He is a man-- and I can't imagine what that kind of ridicule does to a person. Quite often and much to my dismay, he has turned the other cheek on those that have thrown him under the bus-- even those in his own party. He is a better person than me.

In just a few short weeks, President Bush will hand the keys of the White House to President Elect Obama. As we have done since the beginning of this Great Nation, there will be a PEACEFUL transition from the current president to the next. I have no doubt, President Bush has an expectation of his staff to be helpful and cooperative with the incoming team. I have no doubt the White House will be left orderly and in tact with nothing missing and nothing destroyed, unlike how the Bush's found the White House when they arrived in January 2001.

For me, there is one image of President Bush that is burned in my memory. The burden he has carried shows in every crease in his face. I am so grateful that it was George W. Bush that was our President on that horrific day. He made the right decisions, he made the right choices. He was in Lebanon, Ohio-- just a skip and a jump up the road from here... the year was 2004.

In a moment largely unnoticed by the throngs of people in Lebanon waiting for autographs from the president of the United States, George W. Bush stopped to hold a teenager's head close to his heart.

Lynn Faulkner, his daughter, Ashley, and their neighbor, Linda Prince, eagerly waited to shake the president's hand Tuesday at the Golden Lamb Inn. He worked the line at a steady campaign pace, smiling, nodding and signing autographs until Prince spoke:

"This girl lost her mom in the World Trade Center on 9-11."

Bush stopped and turned back.

"He changed from being the leader of the free world to being a father, a husband and a man," Faulkner said. "He looked right at her and said, 'How are you doing?' He reached out with his hand and pulled her into his chest."

Faulkner snapped one frame with his camera.

"I could hear her say, 'I'm OK,' " he said. "That's more emotion than she has shown in 2 1/2 years. Then he said, 'I can see you have a father who loves you very much.' "
"And I said, 'I do, Mr. President, but I miss her mother every day.' It was a special moment."

Special for Lynn Faulkner because the Golden Lamb was the place he and his wife, Wendy Faulkner, celebrated their anniversary every year until she died in the south tower of the World Trade Center, where she had traveled for business.

Saturday morning we woke up to see our first real snow of the season. It took us by surprise as snow wasn't in the forecast. And as usual... folks here in the tri-state area forget how to drive on the white stuff so needless to say there were countless accidents.

Seeing the snow made me think of the song, Marshmallow World--- which made me think of Mark Steyn. Mark Steyn was on Bill Bennett's Morning in America plugging his single (OK... talking politics)... it's too much fun. You can buy the CD here. It is currently sold out at Amazon.com. Anyway, thinking of Mark Steyn singing Marshmallow World made me think of the Rat Pack version... There is no one more cool than Dean Martin--- except of course Frank Sinatra-- The Chairman of the Board. In the video you can see Dean is escorting Frank down the piano keyboard stairs. Then the two men get to there marks in front of the camera and you can see Frank pulling up his socks.... Dean glances down with a "do what you gotta do" look... cracks me up... they make even the mundane look cool.

Oh how the world has changed...

Paul Beston wrote a nice article on Frank Sinatra in the October 2008, American Spectator.

Sinatra sounds like an American man, or the way American men used to sound, anyway, back in the days when men wore suits and hats, before presidential candidates danced on ladies’ talk shows, before baseball players talked about psychotherapy and—well, you get the idea. In his famous 1966 Esquire piece, Gay Talese wrote that Sinatra was “the embodiment of the fully emancipated male, perhaps the only one in America.” Forty years on, that’s an enviable title indeed. Younger American men know that this older time existed, and though they mock it easily, their mockery is not always easy to distinguish from envy. Especially when they hear something like “Luck Be a Lady,” in which Sinatra sings, with joyfulness but also a hint of threat:

Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I’m the guy that you came in with

They might be reminded of how constricted they are in their dealings with the fairer sex, even as, it seems, all the barriers have come down. Part of Sinatra’s old-style manliness was also about sophistication and knowingness, of course; his up-tempo music (always played by the top hands in the business) exudes a class and refinement that rock, devoted to spirit over craft and rooted despite its best efforts in the adolescent, simply does not possess.

I also found this wonderful piece by Bobby Lamb at The Jazz Professional when trying to find out what brand of whiskey these men drank.

For the November 16 concert all the film stars were there: Frank’s friends: Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, Kirk Douglas, you name them, they were all sitting there, row after row. The most outstanding film stars in the world, all keen to partake in this exciting concert. The lights went down, and in walked her serene highness Grace Kelly, the Grace Kelly from High Society and all the great Hitchcock films. She was a very longtime friend of Frank Sinatra. She came on and began to tell the story of the time when Frank Sinatra visited the set of Mogambo, which was being made in West Africa with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner. She told the story of how, on Christmas Day, Frank came out of the jungle with a cake and a bottle of champagne, singing White Christmas to cheer the crew up. He had gone to West Africa to be near to Ava Gardner; they were having a big romance at the time.

Just a quick note on a couple of things... Michael and I are strong supporters of Young America's Foundation. It is one thing to preach to the choir--our generation, but the reality is that the future of our country is in the hands of young people and that is where the focus should be. Children are indoctrinated into left leaning views at an early age in the most innocent ways. I love cartoons, but can not stomach most of them, the subtle yet constant drumbeat message is there for the taking. How things are taught in school , the constant drumbeat of television, radio, movies and the internet, the shift in philosophy of team sports, the arts, etc... and once a child has entered college, they are pummeled by left thinking professors and organizations.

Ronald Reagan described their mission, "Young America's Foundation programs offer invaluable assistance to young men and women searching for the encouragement and understanding necessary to reinforce the values of a free society and individual responsibility. As young conservatives, you have a very special task before you — that of developing the political awareness of your fellow students."

I urge you to do a couple of things:
1. Visit Young America's Foundation website.
2. Go to Townhall.com and go to the podcast links, there you will find recorded speeches by today's top conservatives. Go HERE now or if you are not sure or don't have time to go through the list, then listen to THIS ONE. It is story I had not heard and a recollection from someone who dearly loves this country. Listen to what he says.

You can either listen to these podcasts on your computer or you can download them to your iPod/MP3 player.

In the meantime, I have been working on a couple of posts however, the terrorist attacks in India are pretty disturbing and have distracted me. I hope and pray the new team coming into office is paying attention and realizes the world is not a safe place and people still want us dead simply because we are Americans or simply because we are Jewish...

Ah, I will let you in on a little secret, I am going to be moving my blog in the new year. You can take a sneak peak here... It is still under construction, but I think it is coming along nicely. Anyone know what is up with Blogrolling??

Go get some coffee first... I have a lot to ramble about this week so bare with me.

This past week I traveled to Pascagoula, Mississippi via Louisville, Atlanta, and Gulfport. (There isn't a direct flight from Cincinnati to Gulfport... and Cincinnati airfare was over $900.00... travel 1 1/2 hours south to Louisville airfare is a little over $300.00... go figure.) The sunny skies were a welcome change although it was a tad chilly for southerners. The flight from Atlanta to Gulfport was humorous in the sense that a handful of pigeons not interested in the chilly climate in Atlanta decided to board our little commuter seeing this would be a much more efficient means of flying south. Too funny... After shooing the pigeons out of the jet, our flight attendant as described by one of my travel mates was no doubt someone who won a law suit with the airlines and was most likely a girls physical education teacher in a previous career... definitely not your stereotypical flight attendant. Prior to take off she broke the cable on the door so we sat and waited for it to be repaired.

Now our trip home from Gulfport to Atlanta was smooth sailing until smoke filled the cabin of the commuter. The pilot's voice came over the intercom stating something to the effect that he had shut off the air conditioning unit... 2 seats ahead of me was a pilot catching a ride home and he and the flight attendant were chatting with a great deal of enthusiasm to the pilot in the cockpit... Once we landed and began to taxi it felt as if we were going to take off again... the pilot floored it and hauled @$$ to the terminal. We pulled up --sort of-- to a terminal... this time the pilot calmly stated, "please quickly gather your belongings and exit the plane quickly and calmly." Nice. I was in row 3 and was off the plane and on the tarmac where I saw one of the engines smoking... good times.

We stayed at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi- a very nice casino and resort on the gulf. You may remember Jim Cantore standing in front of the Beau Rivage reporting on Hurricane Katrina. The Hard Rock Cafe Casino and Resort was next door under construction. Needless to say, after Katrina... the Hard Rock was gone and the Beau Rivage was in bad shape. The last time I saw the Beau Rivage all the windows had been blown out, part of it was missing. It has been a while since I was last down here, still a lot of devastation, but the rebuilding continues. The picture to the left was taken with my cell phone, so it is pretty poor quality. You can see the top of the neck of the Hard Rock guitar in the lower left... But that sunrise was spectacular. The only thing that was missing was my better half.

Besides the meeting we had with our customer, (and returning home safely) the most important part of the trip for me was seeing all the men and women in uniform. Every flight we had included active duty servicemen. All were heading overseas. I can't tell you how humbling it is to see these young men and women preparing themselves. This time of year we are all busy with thoughts of the holidays... the hustle and bustle. Take a moment to remember them. They are off to be in harms way.

So with thoughts of the men and women I saw in the airports earlier in the week. On Thursday, after I was back home safe and sound and since I had the day off, I went to Union Terminal to see the Lima Company Memorial. Words can not express how moving this memorial is.

The faces of the young men were absolute perfection. Anita Miller, the inspired artist, captured the spirit of each of the young bright eyed men. I was captivated by each one. I can not express adequately what it was like to stand there. The portraits form a circle. To look at the portraits you must enter that circle and you are then surrounded by these men. Even though these are paintings of the men, there is a sense of safety in that perimeter, a sense of camaraderie between those men that we mere civilians will never comprehend. In front of each portrait are the actual combat boots of the young man that wore them. The families provided the boots and I must tell you that was probably the toughest part of this exhibit. On the outer perimeter of the circle are the names of each young man, their age, their rank, their hometown. There are flowers, letters and other memorabilia left by loved ones allowing those of us not lucky to have known them in life an opportunity to capture a glimpse of what they were, who they were.

Here are the photos... the lighting was not optimal, but I hope you gather a sense of what it was like to stand in the middle of these fallen heroes.

Anita Miller was able to capture the spark of each young man. They were alive and popped off the canvas, the personal items added to this. I was there pretty much by myself and spent about two hours looking at the paintings and reading the letters and cards and looking at the scrapbooks and photos. To the families and loved ones of these young men lost three years ago, my heart and prayers go out to you. The sacrifice you have endured is more than I can imagine. I thank you for raising sons that felt such a calling must be answered. I thank the wives and fiances and girlfriends for loving these young men. I thank the siblings and cousins and friends and all those that were touched by these fine men. My heart goes to the children of these men. Your father was a hero and I am so sorry you will only know him through the pictures and stories you are told.

Take a moment as you are saying the blessing or toasting each other to say a prayer or raise a glass to these men from Lima Company. There are others there today that have also answered the calling. Say a prayer for them too.

Michael made our annual trek up to Amish country this past Friday. He and I were absolutely giddy about the trip--- definitely an "old people moment". Really, you would have thought we were on our way to Cancun... Holmes County, Ohio is about 3 1/2 hours northeast of us. We had perfect weather and it was simply a beautiful day. It was the first time we had ever visited on a Friday and this late in the year---We typically make the drive to see the fall colors. That wasn't in the cards this year, but seriously, it was so much more enjoyable... far less people.. We quickly realized Friday is wash day in Amish country--- We saw clothing out drying everywhere. It was pleasant to see-- reminded me of being a kid and my grandma hanging the laundry outside to dry. I remember the clothes line posts that she would secure under the clothes line to hike the line up high so the clothing wouldn't drag. I remember the sheets billowing in the breeze and running in between them, making believe it was a curtain to a stage where I would perform some brilliant song for all to hear. I still remember how wonderful the sheets would smell when she would pull them off the line...

Now, the food in Amish country is... Oh my gosh... incredible... homemade pies and bread. We had dinner at a place called Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant. It was cozy--- home cooked food. Served by lovely young Mennonite and Amish girls, the service was impeccable, the portions- huge... It was at this point we decided that someone should invent a gravy that could also be used as a dip. OMG...
We went to some of the shops but only found a couple of places that interested us--a bulk food store... which was pretty cool for Michael and an incredible antique store. In fact, I have never seen it's equal anywhere. Run by another member of the Amish community- I could not believe how many pieces I found that I instantly fell in love with. I have quite literally been looking for a china closet for 10 years. I found at least a dozen there I could have taken home at that moment. The rest of the shops we visited were of the "cute variety". The choxkie--- the overly cute painted signs that say things like, "friendship" and "love" with teddy bears and cute snowmen painted on wood or tin all of which is made in China or India... you know, the stuff you find in the Tenderhearts mail order catalog. The trip was rejuvenating for the mind and soul. Next time, hopefully we will leave with a beautiful piece of furniture hand crafted by someone over a century ago- or possibly a beautifully handmade quilt... or one of those way cool Amish made wicker baskets. Our focus was on the scenery and those areas not inundated by tourism, but rather the freshly plowed fields and the laundry and the big skies, rolling hills and gorgeous valleys, and the young Amish children selling their wares and tending their chores... very nice...very nice indeed.

On Saturday, November 22, the Fourth Annual Dinner and Auction benefiting the Nick Erdy Foundation will take place. I never knew Nick, but like so many in this community, I felt I did. I have written about him and others we lost from Lima Company. He is still remembered. He is not forgotten. A memorial for those lost from the 3/25 in 2005 has arrived in Cincinnati it has been on display in Ohio's State Capital since Memorial Day. In the coming days, I will make the trip to Union Terminal to remember those fine young men. I expect it to be highly emotional.
Nick Erdy and Dustin Derga were best friends. Dustin was killed on May 8. Nick was killed on May 11. They had plans together... to become firemen... or to open a bar in Florida... to live their lives... to get married to their girls back home, who also had become close friends. May 2005 changed everything for those in Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment. Remember them. Keep them in your hearts, pray for their families and loved ones. Pray for those still in harms way. Thank them when given the opportunity.

for all of you from the 3/25 who gave the ultimate sacrafice, we salute you. There are not enough men out there who would pick up a gun and go fight for their country. It is a shame that more people could not be like you... You served and lived for a purpose and that is more than most can say... you fought for freedom, your families, friends and the future of America...You had an honorable job and you held up your end of the bargin... It is like that Toby Keith song.. "American Soldier." "And I dont want to die for you but if dyings asked of me, I'll bare that cross with honor cause freedom don't come free!" You all are the true definition of HERO and that will never be taken from you. I regret not being able to meet all of you.... but the ones I did know... CPL Dustin Derga and LCPL Nick Erdy, were among the greatest people I have ever met. Fun loving, carefree, and full of commitment to the United States Marine Corps and their fellow Americans. You boys will forever be in our hearts! And the only thing we ask of you now is to watch over you fellow soldiers and bring them home to us! To the rest of the 3/25... You are in our thoughts and prayers! Just remember those men who lost their lives will now be fighting next to you for the rest of their lives... and in return just live your life with them in mind... never forget!! Fight hard... Come home safe!!! We will all be waiting for your return....

For the past couple of months, I have spent my Saturday afternoons with my mom. Initially, I thought it was going to be a nightmare… you see she purchased her very first computer… my role was to teach her how to use it. Try explaining how to use a mouse to a person who has never used a mouse… "Why do you right click sometimes and left click other times?" "I dunno… you just do…" How do you teach home keys? "Why are the letters not in order?" "I dunno…that’s just the way it is…" I found some great online tutorials and my mom has been steadfast in her eagerness and determination to master this contraption. I have to be honest… I was dreading this… my mom is stubborn and impatient and does not listen… but I must tell you, it has been surprisingly quite wonderful. We have spent more time together these past couple of months than we have in the past ten years. She has had a chance to get to know me… I have gotten to know her. The best part… we actually enjoy each other’s company. I have shared in this forum in the past my mom’s trials and tribulations. She is a woman that is inspiring… just in her being. She is self taught, self disciplined, self determined, self made. She had nothing as a child, she had nothing when she came to this country…She had even less when my father was around. She put my brother and me ahead of everything… she has endured more pain and suffering and yet sacrificed more than anyone I have ever known in my life. She is a savvy businesswoman and has been quite successful. She lives modestly, however, she can afford much more than what she has. Her story is the American Dream personified and one that should be held up for others to see and be inspired.

The election upset my mother. Having her beloved adopted country much less her home Ohio --- Hamilton County--- Cincinnati go Democrat was more than she could take. She has never depended on anyone but herself to make things happen. She never depended on government or the welfare system to provide for her. My father was absent and never paid child support. She did it on her own… I can tell you that she is pissed… She is hurt… the people in the country she loves so much have become so dependent and so willing to hold out their collective hands to take something never earned is just beyond her comprehension. Her heart is broken, but not her spirit and definitely not her intestinal fortitude.

I share my mother’s sentiments.

Barack Obama is to be congratulated on running an excellent campaign. His election is historical and should be noted and commended. He will join a small fraternity of Americans -43 soon to be 44. President-elect Obama has my respect – he will be the President of the United States and I will always have respect for the office.

I must confess--- I was so depressed Tuesday night. Although President-elect Obama ran a centrist campaign, all roads for him lead to a very left leaning, dare I say it, Socialist mindset. All one has to do is listen to the NPR interview, look at those he associates with and see what his philosophy is. He is all about bigger government… he wants government to be the answer to all our woes.

Wednesday I woke up still depressed. I heard John McCain’s concession speech… I turned off the radio and listened to my iPod the rest of the day. As Wednesday rolled along, I became angry. I realized that had Senator McCain won, I would have been extremely disheartened and disgusted by his presidency. Senator McCain is a gentleman. He is exactly what he has always been. His life story is one we should all revere. It can be argued, he has sacrificed and put himself on the line for our country more than anyone in modern American history. There is no doubt Senator McCain as president would have been strong on the war against terror. However, he would have reached across party lines and compromised on things I as a conservative would never stand for. I still am not clear on how he was going to secure our borders... or not. He would have presented good candidates for the Supreme Court. However, Senator McCain as president would not have been about smaller government. I was not keen on voting for him until he brought Sarah on board. As a conservative, I was left without a candidate. Voting for Barr was not an option and as far as I was concerned a wasted vote. I voted for McCain, but more so and more importantly… I voted for Sarah Palin.

The latest trashing of Sarah has me infuriated. The fact that Senator McCain even after his campaign chose not to come to her defense adds to my reasons for why he is not our next president. McCain's staff trashing this woman makes me believe even more that he would have been left of center on many many issues. The election was not a landslide… we are very much a divided country. It is a cultural battle. Senator McCain was not the conservative we on the right crave and believe is needed for this great land. We wanted to believe... we needed to believe. We want smaller government. We want to live our lives and stay out of the way. We want the government to defend our borders. We want the opportunity to strive towards our American Dream-- whatever it might be. That’s it.

My grandmother, a staunch conservative, active politically throughout her adult life, a member of the greatest generation asked the rhetorical question… How did we get here? I guess it started just a little bit at a time… no one notices that way… little things… it starts in the schools… subtle changes to how kids are taught... what they are taught… kids playing sports… everyone gets trophies… there are no losers…everyone wins… we are politically correct... we have changed the culture by changing how we speak... smoking is bad for you… became the big tobacco devil… now the 2 smokers left in the country are lepers and considered subhuman…traffic cameras to catch speeders under the guise of keeping us safe but we know it is more about the ability for our local communities to collect extra money... motorcycle helmet and seat belt and child seat laws... of course all good ideas... but mandated by the government? Law abiding gun owners are required to register their guns. Certain guns are banned. Guns kill... Trans fats are now banned… There are mandates on fast food in some cities. Before too long the obese person or maybe the slightly overweight person in line at MacDonald's will be sent off to be with the smoking lepers. Fat people are too ignorant to make a decision on what to put in their body. Kids are not being taught American history--- . Celebrity worship...panems and circuses... We in this country have lost our moral compass and have muddied the waters on what is right and what is wrong. It is more important for men and women to be equal, subsequently, we have a bunch of girl like men while women call each other dude... and we are more promiscuous all because once upon a time we had to figure out what the definition of the word "is" is... Along the way we forgot that we are very different creatures. Women now instead of raising and nurturing children are substituting dogs to obtain that love. With Obama as president no one (except those making over $250,000--- $200,000--- $150,000) will have the burden of paying for everything… I guess I should be happy—Michael and I can sit back and let someone else pay our mortgage… pay for our gas… no more worries. I must ask though, what else is on that slippery slope? The slope has become much more steep... What is next? I suppose it is just a matter of time before we are required to purchase carbon offsets, experience rolling black outs on a regular basis, in some areas of our country water rationing, and taxation on the amount of garbage we generate.

We have entered the age of self entitlement and subsequently developed an insatiable dependency on the government tit to think for us and provide for us.

Senator Mitch McConnell will receive lots and lots of notes from me—more now than ever before. He isn’t the conservative I would like him to be… however, I’m watching him. I will make sure he knows what I think… He is the Republican Minority Leader in the Senate and has a lot of work ahead of him. Those of us in Kentucky, those of us across the country need to pay attention and make him understand.

So, I look to the horizon. I think of Ronald Reagan and his shining city on the hill and the beacon we are supposed to be… I think of morning in America… I will pray for President-elect Obama, as I have prayed for President Bush. I INTEND TO BE THE LOYAL OPPOSITION. Meaning, I will be loyal to the country, I will be loyal to the office of the President. However, I am here… I am watching… I will not be nice for the sake of being nice. I love this country and that will not change. I will stand by my conservative values and will do everything I can to keep her the land of the free and home of the brave.

The same two questions should be asked of Barack Obama.
Who is this man? Can we trust him with the Presidency?

Anyone reading this that believes the money Senator Obama is referring to is money spent on the military...being redistributed to other more worthy programs... nah baby nah... that will just be the start... if you are a hard working American citizen... he will raise our taxes... will will lose more than just our money... Before John Mellencamp was John Mellencamp, he was Johnny Cougar and then later John Cougar. This name was a record company decision and not his... Eventually he was able to be John Mellencamp. I like John Cougar and even some of the John Cougar Mellencamp stuff. . His breakout album of course was 1982's American Fool album-- the one that had Jack and Diane, Hurt So Good and my favorite from that album Have a Hand to Hold On To. The year I graduated was the year of "little pink houses"... Oh Gawd... yuck. But it also had the song Play Guitar which is simply fun. I like his older stuff... the Sunday Song is funny... there is a sense of humor to the lyrics and the composition of the song pulls you in and builds to a crescendo- an exclamation of needing someone that won't make him crazy! Along the way and over the years John became angry. He takes himself way too seriously. He also picked up the paint brush and has done some interesting art work. Like his present day persona, it is dark, thick, unattractive and angry. I'm not sure why the small town boy became so angry... maybe he has forgotten... something... I hope he can find his happiness. Life is too short.

Ramble:
As a kid, I was incredibly fortunate to have a great deal of stand out teachers. My Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Reed held my hand and introduced me to other kids in the class... being painfully shy... she took a great deal of time to make sure I was OK.

Mrs. Sleichter was about 102 years old when I had her as my 2nd grade teacher... Gawd she was mean. But for whatever reason, I really liked her. I remember there was this kid that was always throwing up in class, so the janitor would always have to come in and throw that kitty litter stuff down... I remember she was forever sending him to the corner because the kid got sick all the time. She insisted we were all old enough to realize when we weren't feeling well and should ask to be excused. She was a strict disciplinarian... and did not tolerate fidgety 7 and 8 year olds. Mrs. Sleichter was the only teacher to impose corporal punishment upon my behind...why? Because she had issued a dictate... "The next person to drop their pencil will go out in the hallway for a swat." Ya... you guessed it... I dropped my pencil...

My 4th grade teacher was Mrs. Carroll and I loved her... all the kids did... She was beautiful and smart and kind and generous and young. She read Ramona to us... This particular grade school was in a town that was supported by GM and the plant had closed... it was predominantly blue collar, unemployed, and single parent homes. My neighborhood was gross... I digress. Anyway the two 4th grade teachers took a great deal of time with the kids... We were pushed in reading and math and history. We were studying Japan and Mrs. Carroll asked if I would teach the rest of the students how to use chop sticks... That was disastrous... buttons and chopsticks everywhere... Because so many kids came from broken homes, Mrs. Carroll took time with each of her students. She was engaged and an active participant in our formative years. She called home and spoke to my mom on a regular basis. She knew our situation and how late my mom worked. Mrs. Carroll would often stay late at school with me to help ease some of the monetary woes my mom had and this helped a great deal with the cost of a sitter. Anyway, toward the end of the school year Mrs. Carroll indicated to the class that she was moving away and wouldn't be back. She was 24 and was moving with her husband to support him while he finished obtaining his Master's degree. We all cried. It was horrible. She promised to write all of us, but in turn we would have to write her. I kept in contact with Mrs. Carroll up through high school. She was a source of advice and friendship. She was a wonderful and kind person and I wish I had stayed in touch. I had heard that after she put her husband through several years of school and a number of affairs, he divorced her. Terrible.

Then in 8th grade I had Mr. Benton... my uncles and father had this man as a teacher... This man walked to the beat of his own drum and did not apologize for it. He was a large robust man with a large booming voice with a Kentucky accent. He had the same buzz haircut in the 70's as he did in the 50's. He wore black horn rimmed glasses, navy blue work pants and suspenders every day. He was the first history teacher I had that expected us to pay attention and to pay attention to what was happening in the world today. He loved our country and what it stood for. It was the first time I remember recognizing that sort of pride in someone outside my own family. He would make proclamations about organized religion and that if he wanted to go out in the front of the school yard and worship under the tree, he could do that. Why? Because this was America! A staunch conservative and a little crazy? Perhaps.

Mrs. Zando was our English Lit teacher and she introduced me to Shakespeare and the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses and all the wonderful mythological stories. She loved Shakespeare and it is because of her, that I have such an appreciation. At that time, my grandmother had given me a charm bracelet and each birthday and holiday she would add to it. Mrs. Zando asked if she could contribute to my bracelet. She gave me a delightful little silver Dutch shoe from when she had visited Holland... It is still on my charm bracelet. To this day, I love reading mythology.

High school brought a handful of teachers that made a difference in my life... Mrs. Brough, Mr. Wolfe, Mr. Enders--- he loved Dolly Parton, and Mr. Kraus.

Mr. Kraus is the reason for this week's post. Jimi, an old friend brought to my attention that Mr. Kraus had tragically died this past May. The news hit me like a ton of bricks. NO. This was not possible. Mr. Kraus was the only teacher I had all four years of high school. So, he literally watched me grow up.

He was one of my art teachers- being art class-- there was considerably less structure, the radio was usually playing in the background, kids talked and joked during class-- creativity was not inspired by a module of time but by life, so if one wasn't creative during the class... well, one had to be creative at home or before or after school. I never do well without structure. It is my nature to become lazy. Mr. Kraus was a good teacher. He encouraged me in my first couple of years of high school. He obviously realized my shy nature and worked to help me express through art. He pushed me to enter a couple of competitions and I did OK receiving recognition for my work. As a junior I was coming into my own, but at the same time I was more interested in being social and was not disciplined in maintaining my school work and it was easy to keep things from my mom. Besides, my creativity was in my head... actually putting brush to canvas or pencil to paper did not come naturally for me. I had to really focus... and practice... There were so many other kids that had this incredible gift... Jimi and Rodney. In any event the classroom was always loose and free spirited. I remember always laughing and having fun in his class. Mr. Kraus loved music. He was a huge fan of John Cougar. Jimi reminded me that Mr. Kraus had seen the Stray Cats and Jimi, Gary and I were so jealous. He also saw Men at Work and brought back a pin for me... I still have it. We talked about music and art and stuff...

The other thing... Mr. Kraus could not spell... he was horrible... another friend, Scott would mercilessly make fun of him. It was always in good spirit and fun.

Mr. Kraus was around for every single boy I dated during high school. He teased me about some of my selections...from a competing school. One day late in my junior year Mr. Kraus pulled me aside and asked me what I was going to do- what my plans were- he was disappointed because I had not really worked on pulling together a portfolio to get into art school. In fact, I had not even applied. He expressed his concern that although I had an eye for composition and perspective and story, I had not applied myself to learn fundamentals. He expressed his concern for my lack of discipline and he did not want to see me waste any of my talent. At the time I had picked up photography and was into that, but it was more of a means of documenting my teenage life and not an artistic outlet. His message was loud and clear and a pill I chose not to swallow. My senior year was filled with more of the same- fun and frolicking. Mr. Kraus was part of our lives and we enjoyed our time in his class. He pulled me aside one more time and asked me what I was going to do about college.

I told him I needed to work for at least a year before heading off to college. Grants and scholarships were not going to cover it and I wasn't about to ask my mom for assistance. He made me promise that I would never give up on art and asked that I keep in touch. I graduated and my life went on... it took a different direction than I expected, but one that I am quite happy with.

Over the years I have often thought of Mr. Kraus. I had promised Mr. Kraus I would come by and visit him but never did. He was good to me- he wasn't just a teacher, he was a friend and he wanted the best for us. He was honest with me and thought I was wasting my talent. When Jimi's sister died, I wanted to contact him. When Rodney committed suicide, I wanted to contact him. I never did. I wanted to invite him to my wedding but for whatever goofy reason, I changed my mind. So, this past week, Jimi told me about Mr. Kraus. He had Parkinson's Disease, was confined to a wheelchair, living in a nursing home... divorced with 2 kids... 20 and 16 years old. He had gone to see a band--- still passionate about live music. On his way home, he was hit by a car. Those on the scene performed CPR in an attempt to save his life, but it was too late. He was only 56 years old.

How cruel life can be... a man who used his hands and fingers to create- stricken with a disease that steals that gift from him.
I never had the chance to thank him. He was the first person in my life to offer me real constructive criticism... he was right... I did lack self discipline. I need structure, I know that about myself now... and I move through life accordingly.
Upon reading the news about Mr. Kraus, I wrote Jimi, "...despite his life situation, I hope and pray he was happy--proud of his kids-- still listening to music, appreciating art and finding that talented young soul-- that diamond in the rough. There were so many talented kids that went through his class. I pray even though he was alone that night, he wasn't alone in spirit and that he was loved. "

Teachers are amazing and wonderful creatures. You don't realize the lives you touch and to what extent. Mr. Kraus was only in my life for four short years, but the mark he left will remain with me always.

Although I never went back to visit Mr. Kraus, I did keep my other promise. I never gave up on art. It is still just as important to me today as it was 25 years ago. It is a rare day that I pick up my sketch pad, but I always stop and see the art. Thank you, Mr. Kraus.

Song of the week: Reach Out (I'll Be There), The Four Tops

I love Motown. The first time I remember hearing this song was in the movie, Cooley High. Mom for the first time could afford to take us to see a movie-- I must have been about 10 years old, she hadn't bought our house yet. So, since she trusted me and her English was still not great, I grabbed the newspaper and saw the ad for Cooley High...Sounded good... it was about high school kids growing up in Chicago. There were high school kids in our neighborhood at the time... I admired them... wanted to hang out with them.. So, my mom agreed and off we three went to the drive in. Oops. Not really intended for 10 year olds... Too funny. No permanent damage, I didn't get most of the movie... my brother fell asleep and my mom laughed at the situation and covered my eyes for a few scenes. It wasn't until I saw the movie again when I was about 15 or 16 did I get it. It's a really good movie with a great soundtrack. The music is what carried you from scene to scene... it's a dark look at growing up... the urban version of American Graffiti? No... it's not...

The lead vocalist of The Four Tops is now forever silent, may he rest in peace. We will always have the music...

So, this week we have all met Joe the Plumber. Is it just me or does anyone else see the resemblance between Joe and Sci Fi's Ghost Hunter Plumber Jason Hawes? I digress.

So much has been written about Joe Wurzelbacher. The guy is normal... raising a son... working, paying his taxes and living his life. He is an undecided voter who went to an Obama rally to find some answers. He asked a simple question. He was doing the right thing.. the American thing... He was taking this election seriously and collecting information so he could make an informed decision and cast his vote accordingly. Watch the complete exchange:

In every interview... Joe has spoken for me... He is proud of our troops and what they have done and continue to do... He doesn't apologize for pursuing the American dream...

The only thing I feel bad for him is he is a Cincinnati Bengals fan... I'm so sorry Joe.. but even that... that makes me appreciate him too.

I got into it with someone earlier this week... He said that if Republicans are so concerned about getting folks registered to vote and having them vote Dem, we should be doing the same... HELLOOOO!!! Conservatives are busy working... making a living... paying GD taxes... We aren't hippy dippy lefties that are living off government grants and other government giveaways... we are busy supporting our families and other deadbeats like you...

I remember purchasing my first Doors album as a kid- 14- I do believe... Jim Morrison... wow... that baritone voice... the lyrics and music... weird and psychedelic and nonsensical and dark and foreboding... I remember listening to the album over and over and over... in the dark... (except for my ultra cool black light) in my basement bedroom... definite moments of narcissism... ahh good times...

Nowadays, I listen to The Doors when I am out of sorts... when things don't make sense... so rather than fight it... I just give in and relent to the situation... if you ever hear me playing their song, The End... forget it... game over.

So Saturday morning I wake up to radio news reports about John McCain speaking at another Townhall meeting...

John McCain on Friday moved to calm rising anger among his supporters at rival Barack Obama, calling him a decent man and at one point taking the microphone away from a woman who had called Obama an Arab.

Their anger apparently still at flash point, McCain's supporters then booed him for his conciliatory words about Obama. Read the rest of the article at the Miami Herald.

It's not the kook broad at the end of the clip that can't pronounce Arab... she needed to be shut down and shut up... good gawd... freaking moron.. No doubt she listens to George Noory's Coast to Coast and is well versed in chem trails, werewolves, and shadow people... Stick to the stuff that matters...

The question from the obviously nervous guy had my attention...the question... NOT his lead in to the question... Senator McCain paid attention to the lead in and responded to that and said Senator Obama "is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States."

Why did he say that? Why did he give the media the opportunity for this sound bite? Why didn't he just answer the guy's question about selecting Supreme Court Justices? OK... so now we have Senator McCain's endorsement for Barack Obama for President... good times!

One point of observation is the contrast in attitude-- There is an optimism, a can do attitude in the Republican slogans whereas the Democrat slogans are.... not.

Back in 1964 Ronald Reagan understood intrinsically the importance of this country and the importance of her people and what we must do as a nation. "You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

And in his second inaugural address, Ronald Reagan explained quite nicely, "We are creating a nation once again vibrant, robust, and alive. There are many mountains yet to climb. We will not rest until every American enjoys the fullness of freedom, dignity, and opportunity as our birthright. It is our birthright as citizens of this great republic."

Ronald Reagan never spoke of handouts and redistribution of wealth cloaked in the word change. Instead he described a place where we worked to enjoy the freedoms and the countless opportunities this country has to offer. In the work, we find the satisfaction and appreciation for all that we have and in the work we realize what other opportunities are out there.

So... Just a suggestion to any and all Democrat Presidential Nominee Wannabees of the Future... Please, I beg you... try super duper hard to refrain from using the word, "CHANGE". Y'all have been trying to change for a real long long time. Quite frankly, change for the sake of change doesn't mean anything. Really. It doesn't.

Maybe you can help explain the point of this article in The Times.

The headline reads Hillary Clinton praises Sarah Palin. There are 3 short paragraphs reporting the Clinton's have offered compliments about Sarah. Bill Clinton said, “I come from Arkansas, I get why she’s hot out there.” The remaining 7 paragraphs are about Tina Fey's portrayal of Sarah Palin and the many one liner zingers performed on Saturday Night Live. Now I can tell you I have laughed at these... but can we have a little substance? Please? What was the point of the 3 lousy paragraphs at the introduction of the article?

HILLARY CLINTON, Barack Obama’s defeated opponent in the Democratic primary, has infuriated his supporters by praising Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, for her performance in last week’s television debate.

“It is amazing, you know, she’s been thrust in the spotlight with very little national preparation and I think, all things considered, you saw a very composed and effective debater,” Clinton said.

Her husband Bill recently issued some compliments of his own. “I come from Arkansas, I get why she’s hot out there,” he said.

Her husband’s lukewarm endorsement of Obama was parodied on Saturday Night Live, the satirical show that has become must-see television after the deadly accurate portrayals of Palin by Tina Fey, the comedian.

During her debate with Joe Biden, her Democratic rival, Palin had provided perfect new material for Fey by winking at the audience and using colloquialisms such as “doggone it” and “you betcha!” Fey, 38, creator and star of 30 Rock, the comedy show, mocked the Alaska governor’s descent into gibberish when interviewed by Katie Couric, the CBS newscaster.

The comedian scored again last night with her parody of Palin's debate performance, using some of the Alaska governor's exact words. "Can I call you Joe?" Fey-as-Palin asked Biden. "Because I've practised a couple of zingers where I call you Joe."

She went on to say, "May I say, up close, your hair plugs don't look nearly as bad as people said?" Asked if she would like to answer a specific question, she said, "No thank you, but I would like to talk about being an outsider."

She gave a "shout-out" to the third graders of Gladys Wood Elementary "who were so helpful to me in my debate prep," and said, "We don't know if this climate change - whoosie, whatsit - is man made or if it is just a natural part of the end of days." Asked to give a closing statement, she pulled out a flute and said, "Are we not going to do the talent portion?"

Asked about visiting the United Nations, Fey-as-Palin said she was disheartened to find that so many interesting people there were foreigners. How had things gone? “They embraced me figuratively and a couple of them Pakistani guys literally.” She then referred to Bono, the U2 singer and activist, as the King of Ireland.

Challenged to explain how Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, she replied: “Every morning, when Alaskans wake up, one of the first things they do is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around. If there are, you gotta ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ and if you can’t give them a good reason, it’s our responsibility to say, you know, ‘Shoo! Get back over there!’”

I hit a lot of different blogs this past week. Mostly, it was reading tributes for those souls lost on September 11, 2001. But I also ran a bunch of searches on Sarah Palin, John McCain... you know to get a gauge on where everyone is. I particularly hit some of the Mommy Blogs---

It's a real mixed bag out there... What I don't get is the cattiness and vulgarity of the women that hate and I mean HATE Sarah Palin...

For the record I am voting for the McCain/Palin ticket because their ideology is more in sync with mine-- Smaller government, strong defense and all the other conservative bullets- Pro-Life, Second Amendment, tax cuts for everyone...

I disagree emphatically with Barack Obama. I am opposed to all the handouts he wants to offer. That money has to come from somewhere and at some point it will come out of my pocket. I am absolutely against handouts... A hand up is quite different from a handout... A moment during the Democrat National Convention that caught my attention was during Michelle Obama's speech-- she eloquently spoke about her father and mother:

"He and my mom poured everything they had into me and Craig. It was the greatest gift a child could receive: never doubting for a single minute that you're loved, and cherished, and have a place in this world. And thanks to their faith and their hard work, we both were able to go on to college. So I know firsthand from their lives -- and mine -- that the American Dream endures."

The fascinating part of this speech is that Michelle does not see the poetry of her words. Her parents worked so that she and her brother could go to college. Michelle and her brother appreciated and understood how hard her parents worked so that they could go to college... This is the American Dream personified. And yes, the American Dream does endure, but it will not if our government takes away the satisfaction of earning that dream... I speak for myself as I was taught by my Mother--- a naturalized citizen of this great nation-- work hard- save for the things you want- don't live beyond your means- depend on no one except yourself- don't covet what others have- you can accomplish anything you choose to do once you set your mind to it.

Everything that Scooter Trash Hubby and I have is ours--- we have worked for every bit of it. We live comfortably, but not beyond our means. We have a plan for unexpected issues that may come up.. like the fridge deciding to go kaput or the car behaving badly... We didn't buy a house beyond our means and we don't expect anyone to bail us out if we get into trouble. We both have talked off and on about taking second jobs to try and get ahead so we can pay off our mortgage a little bit faster.

When a hand out is given--- it doesn't solve the problem. Ever. If there are hand outs and free giveaways--- you will never run out of customers.... just go to a trade show where choxkie is handed out--- free pens, stress balls, paper tablets, etc. or to a grocery store where they are cooking up samples for you to try... always... always customers for the freebie... It's human nature... But when you work for something... when you have used your mind or your hands to build something... the satisfaction is incredible. The sense of accomplishment endures.

Our nation is suffering through more hurricanes. Gustav had the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines evacuated. Folks were even evacuated to Louisville-- free of charge--- in fact they have been getting all kinds of freebies while here... So, how is the city of Louisville paid back? The last count was 22 arrested... and these evacuees were upset because they could not go back home when they wanted... The best part? Local tax payers won't be covering the bill... FEMA is picking up the tab for all the expenditures for about 1500 people... I'm sorry... where does FEMA get it's money? ...ahem... uhhh.... that would be me...that would be you.

They've been here nearly a week, and during that time they've enjoyed the sights of Louisville, including a trip to Zoo and a Bats game. The library has provided books to read, and Korrect Optical even provided eye exams and a free pair of glasses for those who left theirs behind in the rush to evacuate.

While they are waiting to get back on their feet, the city continues to spend money to make their stay comfortable.

"We have around-the-clock police presence there at KFEC to make sure everyone stays safe," said Kerri Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Mayor's office. "We've had fire departments out to help set up cots and prepare the medical wing. We've had the Department of Health out there."

And the arrests?

Lt. Col. Phil Turner said that on Wednesday night, 16 of the evacuees were taken to jail on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct and other alcohol-related charges. They were mainly arrested on Preston Street after drinking and causing a disturbance at a gas station and liquor store near the exposition center, Turner said.

On Tuesday, there were six arrests, Turner said. Five of those were on alcohol and disorderly conduct charges.

The other was on a felony sexual abuse charge after a man attempted to grab a teenage boy at the center, Turner said. The teen was not injured, he said. That was the most serious of the charges and the only one that occurred inside the facility, he said.

Sadly, Ike is wreaking havoc on Houston and Galveston. The complaint as it came up with Katrina is that poor people can not afford to evacuate. Bullshit. All one had to do was watch the news or the radio and a free ride out of town could be had... Mike McConnell made the comment on his radio program--- if it were a fire and not a flood... people would have figured out a way to get out... He's right.

A Life Remembered: Toshiya Kuge

Long ago there lived in Japan an old man whose name was Hamaguchi. His farmhouse stood on the edge of a plateau, a flat, open space on the side of a mountain. Behind, the mountain rose in lofty wooded peaks. In front, it sloped gently down to the sea. At the foot of the mountain along the shore was the little village, made up of a hundred or more thatched houses and a great temple.

One afternoon in late summer Hamaguchi sat on the balcony of his house and watched the people in the village below. With him was his grandson, a lad of ten. The rice crop had been very fine, and the villagers were holding their harvest festival. All the shops were closed, and the streets were gayly decorated with ropes of straw and paper lanterns. The villagers in bright-colored clothing were about to join in the harvest dance.

Beyond the village Hamaguchi could see the vast blue sea, wrinkling under the bright after noon sun. Suddenly there came a slight shock. The house rocked three or four times and then stood still. Hamaguchi had felt many earth quakes in his time, and he was not at all frightened until he looked toward the sea.

The water had become dark green and very rough. The tide had suddenly changed --- the sea was running swiftly away from the land! The villagers stopped their dancing, and ran to the shore to watch. None of them knew what this strange thing meant. But the old man on the mountain had seen one such sight as a little child. He knew what the sea would do. There was no time to send a message to the village, nor to ring the big bell in the temple, and yet the people must be warned.

"Yone!" he called to his little grandson. "Light a torch! Quick!"

The boy was puzzled, but he asked no questions. He kindled the torch at once. The old man ran to the fields, where hundreds of rice stacks stood awaiting sale. It was all his wealth. He ran from one stack to another, applying the torch to each. The dry stalks caught fire quickly, and soon the red flames were shooting upward, and the smoke was rising in great columns to join the wind clouds in the sky.

Yone ran after his grandfather, shouting and crying, "Grandfather! Grandfather! Why? Why are you setting fire to the rice?"

The old man had no time to answer, but ran on, firing stack after stack. The high wind caught the sparks and loose brands and carried them farther, until the fields were all ablaze.

The watcher in the temple saw the fire, and set the big bell booming, and the people turned from the sea to look. In Japan every one in the village must give help in time of fire. No sooner did the people see that Hamaguchi's rice stacks were on fire than they began to run. Like a swarm of ants they climbed the mountain --- young men and boys, women and girls, old folk, mothers with babies on their backs, even little children joined in the race to put out the fire.

But when they reached the plateau, it was too late. The flames had already eaten the stacks of beautiful rice.

"It is too bad," the people exclaimed. "How did it happen?"

"Grandfather did it," cried Yone. "With a torch he set fire to the rice. He is mad."

In amazement the people stared at Hamaguchi. "You did this thing !" they cried. "You set fire to the rice fields! "

"Look toward the sea," said the old man, "and know my purpose."

The people turned and looked. Far out they saw a great wall of water sweeping toward them more swiftly than a bird flies. It was the returning sea!

The people shrieked, but their voices were lost in a great sound, deeper than thunder, as the wall of water struck the side of the mountain. The hills shook, and were drenched in a great burst of foam.

When the cloud of spray had disappeared, the people saw a wild sea raving over their village. Great angry waves seethed and tumbled above the house-tops. They rolled away roaring, tearing out houses and trees and great rocks, and bearing them off. Again the wall of water struck, and again and again, with less force each time. At last it fell back once more in its former bed.

The people stood speechless on the side of the mountain. The village was gone; the temple was gone; the fields had been torn away. Nothing was left of their homes but a few straw roofs that floated on the water. But every man and woman and child was safe on the mountain side.

Then the people knew why old Hamaguchi had set fire to the rice. There he stood among them, as poor as any. And they fell on their knees to thank him.

As a little girl-- maybe 3 or 4 years old, I recall my mother telling me Japanese fables and folk stories-- This one and a story about the Little Peachboy are the two I remember the most. I thought this story of sacrifice fitting to share what little I have been able to learn about a young man named Toshiya Kuge.

Toshiya Kuge-san was born in 1981. His parents, Hajime and Yachiyo Kuge must have been proud of their son. He graduated in 1999 from Kitano High School. While in high school he was a good student and was the goalie for his high school soccer team. However, his preference was American football and was a linebacker his freshman year at Waseda University wearing a maroon jersey with number ninety-five. He loved the National Football League and would watch football via satellite in the middle of the night in Japan. He had a poster of the San Francisco 49ers on his bedroom wall, but his favorite team was the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was in his sophomore year at the prestigious Waseda University studying design and creation of materials at the School of Science and Engineering. In the spring of 2001 he attended an intensive 4 week class at the University of Utah to improve his English speaking and writing skills. In an essay for this class he wrote, "he wanted to be friends with people and to study in America."

After his time at the University of Utah, Toshiya went home to Toyonaka City to spend the summer with family and friends before coming back in August 2001 to the United States and Canada- part vacation - part preparation-- Vacation was to go to whale watching, horseback riding and rafting at Jasper National Park-- Preparation was for his goal to scout out a university for his graduate degree. Among the items he took on this trip was his Pittsburgh Steelers jersey.

"He longed to come to America, " said Toshiya's mother,Yachiyo Kuge. "Perhaps he liked the freedom. He loved the language and the music. And sports. He wanted to play sports there."

From the few accounts I have been able to locate, he was friendly and outgoing with all he encountered. He wanted to visit Niagara Falls from both the Canadian and American sides. He had a passion for the big outdoors. On his rafting trip to Jasper he befriended and shared a lunch with two women from Chicago- Kristine White and Debbie Schiies.

On that fateful day, September 11, 2001 Kuge-san was on his way home to go back to school at Waseda. Instead, he and the other brave souls aboard United Flight 93 lost their lives in an attempt to take back their hijacked plane. This young man- his entire life ahead of him stolen and gone in an instant by haters of freedom and liberty. We will never have the good fortune of knowing what this young man could have contributed to our lives---.

In April 2004, Toshiya Kuge was recognized by Professor Shirai, President of Waseda University and was awarded the status of Alumna.

It is important to remember that Americans were not the only souls lost on that dreadful day- 234 people from other countries are counted in the numbers... from those 234 foreigners, 24 were from Japan.

So, I share this fable about the burning rice fields with you--- Although profoundly sad, it is a story of sacrifice and a keen understanding of a greater good. I want to believe--- I need to believe that the men and women who lost their lives that awful day were not in vain, but stand over us as guardian angels to remind us to stay vigilant and to never forget and never ever allow this to happen again.

Project 2996

D.C. Roe is again hosting a day of remembrance at Project 2996.

He has added this beautiful Coat of Arms.

When I decided that Project2996 needed some sort of logo I wanted something a little more dignified than a standard graphic design. I've been a fan of heraldry for many years, and recently have become an student of the field, it seemed a natural fit.

The poppy is a flower that has long been associated with remembrance (including a longtime link with WWI veterans). The four stars above the poppy represent the four planes and four crash sites of 9/11. I remember hating it-- they were part of the New Wave of music that came over from the UK in the late 70's and early 80's in retaliation of disco music. Quite frankly, I thought this group-- this song was crap. Every song they had sounded the same... Ramble:

We are fast approaching an anniversary -- not a day of celebration, but one of remembrance- a time of reflection, a time of prayer for those who lost loved ones on a perfect crystal clear morning in September-- 7 years ago... My gosh- 7 years. I have a niece and a nephew that never experienced a world without 9/11.

Unlike Keith Olbermann, I believe it is our responsibility to remember and see pictures and video-- the horrid images of what happened that terrible morning when we were attacked and murdered. It is important to remember George Santayana's words, "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." We must remain vigilant. We must remain a beacon for all the world.

Since I have been blogging, the post that generates the most traffic every single day for me is the Timeline for Islamic Terrorist Attacks. I find it strangely comforting to know that people worldwide are still looking for answers and information on this subject.

But more importantly, I take a great deal of comfort in the hits I receive from folks looking for news or remembrances of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines we have lost to our war on terror.

I also take comfort in those searching for information on those we lost on September 11, 2001. To date, I have completed three tributes for victims from 9/11 and this year will be no exception. This year I continue my remembrance of those first citizen soldiers on United Flight 93. As I explore the lives of each of these souls, I am moved at how different the backgrounds of everyone were- they realized they were facing evil and took action. They fought back.

I can usually guess when it is someone's birthday or anniversary... the number of "hits" will always spike on that day. I then have an opportunity to say a little prayer and ask God to provide comfort. What I treasure more than anything is the mail I have received over the years from from family and friends of those we have lost. I am forever humbled by the strength and courage these people possess. They are the very fabric of this land. It is our responsibility to remember those we have lost--- That their sacrifice was not in vain.

"I am extremely honored to preside over such an important event for these great men and women," Austin said. "Today, we have the opportunity to welcome 192 of our fellow brothers and sisters in arms into our American family."

Austin took time to individually recognize two troops, Marine Corps Sgt. Sidney King III and Army Spc. Alan Wyrwa, both of whom overcame numerous challenges to become U.S. citizens.

Wyrwa lived in communist-controlled East Germany until he and his mother risked their lives escaping to West Germany when he was 5 years old. King came to the United States in 1988 and spent his first five years separated from his parents. He worked tirelessly to obtain a visitor's visa, and later a green card, to stay in the United States. For the last nine years, he has served in the Marine Corps.

Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman were terrific Tuesday night-- One could hear a pin drop in that hall as Mr. Thompson spoke of what Senator McCain had to endure while in a prison camp. Senator Lieberman spoke directly to the Democrats inviting them to vote for this man. Tuesday night was about Senator McCain's character... his courage... his convictions...

Then last night... oh last night... Michael Steele, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee threw their support behind Senator McCain. Governor Romney was ok. He was not up to par last night, although he did say this:

Liberals would replace opportunity with dependency on government largesse. They grow government and raise taxes to put more people on Medicaid, to take work requirements out of welfare, and to grow the ranks of those who pay no taxes at all. Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity.
It is time to stop the spread of government dependency to fight it like the poison it is!
It's time for the party of big ideas, not the party of Big Brother!

and Governor Mike Huckabee, never someone I was crazy about said this:

and then came the former Mayor of New York City--- so many memorable comments.. but this... this captured his moment:

Then he ran for the state legislature - where nearly 130 times he was unable to make a decision yes or no. He simply voted "present."

and then... OUR GIRL--- Governor Sarah Palin took the stage... Rudy was a tough act to follow.. but she did it... from beginning to end... she captured my heart. Scooter Trash hubby and I were cheering and applauding and high fiving during her speech as if we were watching some sporting event where our hometown team is winning (being that we are in Cincinnati-- you know THAT rarely happens). She was wonderful... she IS the American dream personified. She IS OUR GIRL.

When the cameras focused on her family as she spoke--- her youngest daughter Piper (I believe) holding Sarah and Todd's infant son Trig... licking her hand and smoothing the baby's hair... Freaking priceless..

I would imagine at worst Alaska tourism will be on the rise... at best we will have John McCain as President and Sarah Palin as our FIRST woman Vice President.

So, let me pile on-- I would like to sincerely thank the LIBERAL media--- in particular MSNBC, NBC, and CBS for uniting our BIG WIDE DIVERSE PARTY. Thank you for being the hypocrites... Thanks for reading Daily Kos and doing all that fact finding "proper journalists" are supposed to do...You folks are so entrenched and so desperately want your fella to win--- you have no idea what unbiased reporting is. Sure... you throw us a couple of bones... Joe Scarborough on MSNBC... Bill Bennett on CNN... yeah... 5 to 1 seems like a fair fight.. (in Bill's case- it is) SO--- Thank you LIBERAL MEDIA! WE have found our candidate because of you-- and Conservatives, Libertarians, and Republicans have found the winning ticket.

Senator Biden, you made rash and harsh accusations against good and honorable men without evidence, without fact. You spoke of the Haditha incident as if the accused Marines were guilty and you did so without reviewing any evidence, without any facts, without any due process. You did so based on rumor and innuendo, based on enemy propaganda, and you pronounced them guilty without a trial.

So, Friday just up the highway, Senator McCain announced his running mate.. Sarah Who? You know the chick from Alaska... ok so everyone is buzzing... like so many... I figured it was going to be Mitt... and I was going to be happy with that... since the Senator was in Dayton... possibly Rob Portman... but this... freaking brilliant! First and foremost.. how cute is she? Yes... as my friend and co-worker up in NY said, "MY GIRL!" There are so many photos out there on the internet of Sarah Palin fishing, and hunting... John McCain was so giddy... oh my goodness...his timing - perfect. The GOP is energized and this is nice...

So we know she is pro life, against same sex marriage, an avid hunter and a strong proponent of the 2nd Amendment, she is a card carrying lifetime member of the NRA and she is pro military. It appears she does not like government waste and is not intimidated by anyone and has stood up for ethics reform. NO idea what her stance is on foreign policy or the Iraq War- but I'm sure in the coming days we will know.

The thought of voting for Senator McCain has caused me a great deal of anxiety. Up until this time I felt that I had no other option because Senator Obama is NOT an option. So thank you Senator McCain. Thank you.

Did you see the opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics? Scooter Trash Hubby and I watched and both of us were awestruck. Wow. Amazing and yet creepy... frightening and yep... intimidating... such precision... such a massive organized group... what else can these people do?

We know the Chinese do not value human life-- their one child policy does not infer that Chinese couples "do it" once and move on with life... state sanctioned abortions are the norm. We also know that they continue to imprison dissidents. The tour of The Bodies continues to be controversial as China has never divulged how the "displays" came to their final demise.

None of the people who once inhabited the bodies in Bodies gave their consent to be used this way, and that has made some folks profoundly uneasy. Their doubts are compounded by China's record of human rights abuses, including the harvesting of transplant organs from executed prisoners.

We know that during these Olympic games they have put their collective "perfect" face forward in a little girl Milli Vanilli lip synced song... pay no attention to the imperfect girl behind the curtain... The women's gymnastics team are all at least 16 years of age... ya... right... k... What else has the Chinese government fudged to present a more perfect country-- ?

So, ya... I'm anxious... and now that Russia is beating their collective chests... I'm nervous...

So yesterday I was out in Scooter Trash Hubby's veggie garden picking cherry tomatoes to take to my mom... We had a horrible storm a few weeks ago and all of Michael's plants have been knocked over, so navigating the garden is a little bit of a challenge... Anyway, there I was picking and smiling and thinking how much my mother will appreciate these delightful bits of yum when all of a sudden I saw what I thought was some sort of lizard... OK, after I screamed (surprisingly none of our neighbors came to my rescue- ok.. maybe not so surprising-- consider the fact I have an antisocial tendency). Upon closer inspection, it was a moth... As my oldest niece would text.. OMG!! Ya ain't kiddin' Oh My Gawd! Good grief-- I have never ever seen a moth that huge ever. I took a couple of pictures with my cell phone so the pics aren't that great, but it should give you an idea... This sucker was as as long as my hand from the tip of my pinky finger to my wrist.... icky... ewww... gross.

It's been a few weeks since I have had a chance to write anything. Our hard drive went kaput for the 2nd time--- It seems that Dell either designed or Dell employees assembled the hard drive with the fan installed backwards... nice. Anyway- we are back up and running with minimal loss to data.

Nothing new to report-- I've been working on a post for a while, but I can't seem to get it right... I just come off sounding like a conspiracy theory freak or a "we're all gonna die-- Game Over! " Aliens style nut case... so I'll keep playing with it until the time and words are right. Oh and by the way... and to make it crystal clear--- There isn't a United States Marine that would ever behave like Bill Paxton's character did in Aliens.... ever.

So, anyway, last Sunday Michael and I after a 3 year hiatus made it back to the Dayton Air Show--- specifically to see the F-22 Raptor. H*o*l*y C*r*a*p! This aircraft without a doubt should have our enemies shaking in their boots... For a fighter, this aircraft is huge--- 62 ft long with a wingspan of near 45 ft. Compare that to an F-16 (Viper or Fighting Falcon- you pick) which is not quite 48 ft. long with a wingspan of 31 ft... This girl, the F-22, although big and bulky looking is in fact very swift and manueverable.... she is stealthy, she can cruise at supersonic airspeeds with out using afterburners... She is one fierce bird and our enemies should be fearful... The best part and what is so reassuring about the F-22? It is a United States only asset. No sharing with NATO countries... all ours baby. Stick that.

I'm including some really bad video I took-- no editing---keeping up with the F-22 was no small feet... the camera could not stay focused and that was on the slow pass. In part II, a separate post are a few of the photos I took. Enjoy.

Death Penalty for Suspect in the USS Cole Attack?

"American military prosecutors Monday asked a senior official to approve charges against a Guantanamo detainee for his alleged role in the attack on the USS Colein Yemen in 2000. That and a variety of other terrorism charges against the man could carry the death penalty."

"The prosecutors have requested the charges against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi citizen of Yemeni descent, who is among 14 men the U.S. government considers "high value detainees." The men were held by the Central Intelligence Agency in secret prisons before being transferred to the military-run detention center on the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba two years ago."

Ah.... Guantanamo... you know!! The place where we house all kinds of innocent people just because we are mean nasty Americans!

I love this song... the music... I am a purist when it comes to music... I prefer the original version but in this case I like RHCP version just as much... Flea's bass gets in your bloodstream and just pumps through your veins. Now... the lyrics are about reincarnation and it would be really nice if my faith allowed for do-overs... and trust me... I could use them... I've done some things in my life that I wish I could change or even tweak... but my Christian faith does not allow me to dip into other religions and certainly doesn't give me the luxury of a Groundhog Day... so, I've got one shot while I'm here.

Happy Independence Day... Do we have as much freedom as we did last year? as 5 years ago? 10? 20? 50? 100? Are our liberties still intact or have we allowed them to be taken 1 little liberty at a time? Hardly noticeable, but step back and take a look from 28,000 ft... What have we allowed our government to do? This past week has convinced me that I have no choice but to vote for John McCain...

Ramble:

I haven't posted any photos in a while. Michael and I spent last Sunday being absolutely lazy--- best day ever. We went down to Rabbit Hash, Kentucky which is just a few miles down the road and sits on the Ohio River. From there we drove down to Big Bone Lick, Kentucky and visited a place called Jane's Saddlebag. Rabbit Hash is the real deal... Jane's Saddlebag is trying just a little too hard-- Just a little sidenote... If you have ever visited Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello-- There you will see some woolly mammoth bones given to President Jefferson by George Rogers Clark-- kinda cool... So laugh at the name... we do... but know that the area is rich in American history.

Happy Father's Day!

P.S. I will be making some changes to my sidebar. Wonder Woman is on a temporary hiatus and the Angels aren't writing as much...nor is Kimosabe and my Scootertrash Husband has actually posted a couple of things recently, but they are few and far between. The Jedi has more important things to do with his time... like raise a daughter... These are still my favorites and will still be listed on my blogroll, but at some point, I'll be pulling them down to hopefully make this blog load a little faster...

I will also be cleaning up my blogrolls... lots of bloggers have moved on...

In the meantime, I have also have added some music playlists... I plan to add more... my fix of pop, Motown, 70's classic rock, bluegrass and country has yet to be captured... Anyway, currently I have 5--- Before the First Cup of Coffee, Caffeine from the 80's (a slight misnomer- as there are a couple of new songs in the mix), Morning Metal, Where's the Mosh Pit?, and Chicks, Man... Just go to my sidebar and find the Finetune player and click on the green button in the top right corner of it to view all my lists...

There are enough songs currently loaded to last about 12 hours... and YES... I hand picked all the songs. Let me know what you think...

I really wanted to share this song with you and I could not find it anywhere... I hope you check out one of the links above. This song was on Rosanne's LP, Black Cadillac released in 2006. This album is lovely, thoughtful, haunting, poetic, melancholy-- this song, one of my favorites.

Since this is Memorial Day Weekend and it is a time to remember those we have lost in service to our nation I couldn't help but think about the mothers of some of our local fallen heroes. I can think of no better song-- a song about loss and yearning and remembering and searching and asking for comfort.

Martha and the Vandellas are by far my favorite girl group from Motown... Heatwave, Dancing in the Streets, Jimmy Mack, and of course Nowhere to Run!! It's hard to be blue when you are listening to these girls groovin' to a sound that is now classified as oldies... wait... the 80's are now oldies... this is from the 60's... no matter... the sound is just as fresh today as it was in 1965... AMAZING!

Ramble (Random Thoughts):

** Remember, you read it here first... Amazing is the new awesome... Michael made this observation a few months ago and I now concur... No longer will you hear blond bubble-heads proclaiming something awesome... everything now is AMAZING.... good grief... another perfectly good word run down into the ground...

** I was away on business last week and I had the good fortune to spend some time in Westchester County, New York... Yes... I was in Hillary's backyard... actually, we went to Hill and Bill's place... Hill wasn't home... didn't see Bill. OH.. and their next door neighbor had an Obama sign in their front yard... Priceless!

** The area that Hill & Bill and Martha Stewart live in is quite rural... about an hour outside of New York City... it is quite beautiful... It AMAZINGLY looks a lot like Kentucky...

** I was fortunate to meet a young soldier in the airport in White Plains, New York. He looked like he was 16... no way has this young man shaved more than twice in his life. He was dressed in fatigues holding a bottle of Mountain Dew. I went to a vending machine and forked out $2.00 for a Mountain Dew and $1.50 for some pretzels. I walked over to the young man, held out my hand to shake his--- funny... his hands were soft... maybe a couple of callouses... but young... young hands. I handed him the soda and pretzels and said that I would buy him a drink next time I saw him. He laughed and thanked me... As I began to walk away from him... I realized I hadn't thanked him... I swung around... and said, "NO!! Thank you, Son!" And when I walked away, I made my way to the ladies room where I proceeded to burst into tears... Yes... another young man going off to protect us... to keep us safe... some one's sweetheart...some one's brother... some one's son... These young men ARE AMAZING and that is the definition of AMAZING AND AWESOME... That is the standard we should be using when choosing our words...

** Another observation from Michael... if you are an avid listener of NPR... Michael is about to become your worst nightmare... the next time you listen to NPR... listen to how much the announcer's stutter and stammer... They all do it... all the time...

It should be no surprise that I like this band. I love Pop Music... let me qualify that... I love GOOD Pop Music. Wow... and these boys play their own instruments... that's always a bonus. Good Pop Music should make you tap your foot, even when you don't want to.. good pop music should have you singing, humming, lip syncing or whistling regardless of your skill/talent level... good Pop Music should have a hook... that snags you and stays with you all day.

These boys... or rather young men are reminiscent of early music from the British Invasion-- early Beatles... the Kinks. I adore them. Enjoy.

Was this the last song of an innocent time? I'm serious... I was only a few months old at the time of it's release... Let me know... President Kennedy had been assassinated 2 years prior... we were in Vietnam-- however soldier morale was still high because the American people were supporting the effort and the troops... Seriously, was this the last song of innocence for our country?

Ramble:

This month has been on God's time. And once again I am reminded about how fleeting time can be. One moment has brought sheer joy and pride--- the next absolute sorrow and inconsolable grief. In the joy, I have seen struggle and hard work. In the sorrow, I have witnessed strength through courage and the support of family and community.

** My grandfather's best friend was finally given his medals for his service to our great nation during World War II thanks to a Vietnam Veteran. Vern was a medic... he saved lives and brought aid and comfort to soldiers in 3 major campaigns... including the Battle of the Bulge. He was NEVER issued a winter coat. After the war, he came home like the rest of his generation and got on with his life. I'm so pleased my grandparents invited me to attend. I'm so proud of my grandfather... I'm so proud of Vern. Thank these men... sadly, we are losing them every day...

I have moved the video to a separate entry- above. My apologies for the end of the video... first time using my camera--- and I haven't figured out how to edit yet... That is Ohio Congresswoman, Jean Schmidt presenting Vern with his medals... I've seen her a lot in the past 3 weeks...

** About two weeks ago, a coworker of mine unexpectedly lost her 15 year old son to a brain aneurysm... How does a mother recover from the loss of her oldest child? I don't know... I don't imagine a parent ever recovers from the loss of a child.. it's not the natural order... a parent is supposed to outlive the child...

** Friday morning, I witnessed a friend, 1 of 69 people from 34 countries become naturalized citizens of the United States. If you have never seen this ceremony or been witness to the oath... This is powerful stuff. By choice, they come here...they decide that this is a better place. Federal Court Judge Bunning (yes... son of Senator Bunning) asked that each person stand and give their name, the country of origin and where they reside currently... Safe to tell you... I started crying immediately... First person was from Canada (3 total), the next Russia--- many many Bosnians, 1 Iraqi, 1 Iranian, Filipinos, 3 Mexicans, 1 from Holland, 1 from France, a handful from the UK, China, India.... now... proudly are all Americans... Becoming a legal United States citizen by design is not an easy process and it takes a long time... years... I forget who it was, but one of the women stood and stated her name, where she was from and loudly and enthusiastically proclaimed in her glorious accent that she lived in INDEPENDENCE, Kentucky.
"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

** That same Friday afternoon, I learned from my sis in law that Susan lost her long hard fought battle with cancer. She was only 47. My prayers are with Susan's family-- her husband... her mother... her brother and sisters... her son.... only 47....

** This weekend Matt Maupin finally came home. He was escorted by his younger brother Micah. Carolyn Maupin and Keith Maupin continue to be beacons of strength and dignity and compassion and hope during a time of inconceivable grief and sorrow. On April 9 at a scholarship fundraiser in his brother's name, Micah reenlisted in the Marine Corp in front of a packed house-- including his father and mother. Although Carolyn stood by her son's decision.... You could see the pain and fear in her eyes. Matt is home and the community is welcoming this young man home. Yesterday morning I stood along the highway with my grandfather and a bunch of crusty old Marines waiting for Matt. Kyle--- as usual did something extraordinary to welcome him home and to offer comfort and support to the family... He had a sign(s) made... pictures below... Michael rode in the escort as a member of Patriot Guard Riders from Lunken Airport to the Civic Center. I was very proud of him... he was the only sportie among the Harleys... We all met at the visitation. My grandfather is 85 and in failing health... He wanted to go pay his respect, but the weather was not cooperative. The police officers on duty especially Officer Combs and volunteers saw to it that we would get my grandfather through. He told us to come back in 45 minutes, he would get us a wheelchair and would get us to the front of the long line. Kindness... respect... appreciation...

** Kyle spoke to a very distinguished looking man-- Kyle what was his last name? ... As this man with an umbrella, a stylish suit and an English accent spoke about his time in the service and the artillery he used and the brotherhood he shared with Kyle, the conversation turned to his appreciation of the outpouring of support he was witness to. Shortly after, he shared with Kyle as I eavesdropped that he was asked by President Bush to paint a portrait of Matt Maupin. He described the painting... it will be Matt and his brother Micah... the portrait will be called Brothers.

** Today--- will be Matt's funeral... again the Maupin's are concerned about the entire community... they want us to be able to mourn his loss and celebrate this young man's life. Michael again will participate with Patriot Guard... I will wander down to the ball park... and pay my respect.

Ah... this song... it takes me back 25 years.... I was a senior in high school and we were counting down the days until graduation.... If you lived in the Cincinnati area in 1983, 1984, or 1985 you heard this song... a lot on local radio. The band, The Raisins were (& still are) talented guys. This album was produced by their pal and Covington, Kentucky hometown boy Adrian Belew... who I loved... I fell in love with him when he was doing work with The Talking Heads... Anyway... this song... has been going through my head for weeks. I was disappointed that this album is out of print and The Raisins subsequent reincarnations such as The Bears or most recently Pschodots also out of print... I loaned the album to Rodney years ago and that was that. Now, I can get a used CD for $56.00 on Amazon... nah... so I was pleasantly surprised to find this video on You Tube. I can't remember where I saw this video... as an art student, we critqued the heck out of all the cliches, but liked the video for it's campiness. The melody is catchy and quite danceable... The opening lyrics a little disturbing... but parents didn't seem to mind... they were more concerned by the backwards masking... which was a huge deal when I was in high school. This song, this band brings back all kinds of memories... way too much fun... way too much indulgence... way too dumb... fear is never boring... I'm surprised we survived our teen years...

Love Never Loses It's Way Home

It was a beautiful Sunday. Michael and I were asked to help with some preparations for Matt Maupin's homecoming. Some last minute changes and we were off helping prepare for the Maupin Scholarship Fund Raiser and Dinner. It is held on April 9... the 4th anniversay of the day Matt was captured. Below are a few of the photos I took today. Pretty breathtaking... It was an honor for us to participate. It is my understanding that Keith and Carolyn don't know about this.

Let us never forget. Let us always be thankful for the fine men and women who serve our country.

In Memory, Matt Maupin

We know he isn't in pain, he isn't being tortured anymore. He no longer has to be afraid. Matt has done his duty... he has paid the ultimate price. He has served his country and we must not forget him.

The sad news came yesterday that Matt's remains were found. My prayers and thoughts go to Keith and Caroloyn Maupin and all the friends and family that loved and knew Matt.

He will be home soon.

Song of the week: An American in Paris, George Gershwin

One of my all time favorite movies has got to be An American in Paris. The clip above is from the 15 minute ballet sequence at the end of the movie. Beyond my love and adoration of Gene Kelly, this ending sequence personifies every reason I love musicals. The music of Gershwin takes you from beginning to end in this wonderful MGM musical. Vincente Minnelli captures a mood and directs this film flawlessly. Gene Kelly understood how the camera would see the dancing and knew how to set cameras for the most impact for me, the viewer... each perfectly choreographed scene took you to the precise place and moment and set you on an emotional ride... If you have never seen this movie... see it...

I can't remember when I first saw this musical.. I was little... 8 or 9... I just remember forever having a crush on Gene Kelly... my gosh he was probably 40 at the time of this movie... add him to the list of other older men... Yul Brynner... Cary Grant... Jimmy Stewart... I digress... However, I do remember having an epiphany when I was about 13 or 14 and realized that the final scene- ballet sequence was French Impressionist paintings that had come to life... wow... absolutely incredible... Gene Kelly played an aspiring artist... American ex-Pat, who stayed in Paris after WWII... so it makes sense that Impressionist works of art would be used as settings and back drops... The clip above is by far one of the sexiest, most intimate routines I have ever seen (The Gotta Dance ballet in Singin' in the Rain with Cyd Charisse comes pretty close... but that was seduction... a different kind of mating ritual). Look at the colors... the vibrant look is definitely influenced by Van Gogh... the orange the red... the blue... masterpiece...

Other Thoughts:

What is hate? Hearing the clip below, knowing the words were spoken in a church... it makes it crystal clear this man is an anti-semite... a Jew hater.... a hate America first kind of guy.... words can not describe how unsettling this is....

Song of the week: Pretty Vacant, Sex Pistols

Michael was going through some of his old American Spectator magazines and asked me to read an interview Greg Gutfeld had with Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols last October. Michael is a good man and knows that I liked them a lot once upon a time... For the music? Yeah... but probably more for the attitude. Rebellion against the establishment? I was 13! Of course not! Rebellion against my mom? Maybe... a little... No it was rebellion because I wanted to be different... unique... blah blah blah... I wanted to stand out... Again, I was a kid... and kids are narcissitic. Listening to this kind of music in my suburban little piece of the world would certainly stir things up. I was 13 when I bought this album (along with the soundtrack to Grease.... shh... don't tell anyone.)

The Sex Pistols only released this one album... I still have it on vinyl, but never replaced it on CD. I'm not sure why... I really should... I need to share it with my oldest niece... She'll hate it... but that's the point. Their music is intended to be repulsive, vulgar, and yes a little frightening. I suppose, like Johnny Rotten, I've also grown up... grown older... wiser (maybe) and I'm not angry like that any longer. When I think of Johnny Rotten, I actually think of him when he was with Public Image, Ltd.... One of my favorite songs when I was an angry teenager was a song called Rise--- the mantra--- "Anger is an energy."

Johnny Rotten, the lead singer, seemed a street urchin shot straight out of hell's inner circle, and the enormously untalented Sid Vicious appeared nothing more than walking sewage. ** Ohio's Primary is this Tuesday, so local television and radio have been inundated with commercials... Rush Limbaugh has sent out a request to all Ohioans and Texans to vote for Hillary. And I guess it is now old news but Cincinnati Radio Talk Show host on 700 WLW , Bill Cunningham also made news when he made comments about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton at a rally for John McCain. John McCain redpudiated and apologized for Willy's comments.
Willy Cunningham has been part of Cincinnati radio since I was a little girl... He is an attorney and my earliest memories of him were on Friday nights at my grandparent's home listening to his radio show called Desperate and Dateless... He would take calls from single men and women and play match maker... the show was a scream. Very very funny.

Mr. Cunningham is still on 700 WLW and he is a conservative talk show radio host. He is intelligent and passionate, but first and foremost he is an entertainer-- he will say outrageous things. . that is what some talk radio is about... His ratings drop... WLW drops him...

Understand... we in Cincinnati are used to him... He is like the uncle everyone has. At Thanksgiving, he does something embarassing... and everyone just dismisses it... and says... "oh... that's just Uncle Charlie..." And despite the "hey pull my finger" antics, we still love him...

With that said, Willy was asked to warm up a crowd for John McCain-- he was asked to "give 'em some red meat... . He says the same sort of things on his radio show. Willy is not racist. He is not a bigot. Never has been... never will be. Willy always refers to folks using their full name. Always.

That is where I stop defending him. I am a believer in decorum and pomp and circumstance. For instance, I believe one should dress in a shirt and tie for church, for a wedding, a funeral, a graduation out of respect for the person, for the ceremony. Despite being told to give the crowd "red meat" Willy should have thought about his choice of words. Words do matter. On his radio program the words he chose would have been and are fine. However, this past week, he was asked to warm up a crowd for a man who could one day be the President of the United States. The President of the United States... Every four years we as Americans make a decision and PEACEFULLY turn over keys to someone different... This office has been held by a small fraternity of only 43 men... men such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and our beloved Ronald Reagan. The Office of the Presidency is the highest in our land... We didn't like it when it was defiled by Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton- but the office prevails... our government works... John McCain wants to run his campaign in a respectful manner (not to be confused with consistent-- I.E. McCain's treatment of Donald Rumsfeld). Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton also have the same chance of winning the highest office in the land and despite the vast differences in politics, philosophy and moral standards, they too are entitled to the same respect. To be disrespectful is inexcusable....

Yes, of course John McCain's handlers should have been more cognizant of the what Bill Cunningham was all about... but ultimately, Willy should have known better... and truth be told... his reaction to the criticism shows that it was never about McCain. It has been about Willy and his ego... the fact that he is now going to vote for Hillary... well... that confirms my point.

** Shame on Matt Drudge for leaking the story about Prince Harry.... Had it been a liberal media leak... conservatives would have beeen outraged... Prince Harry follows a long tradition in British Royalty. He loves his country and wants to serve her. Leaking this story, put his life at risk as well as the men serving with and for him...

** We lost an incredible mind this week with the passing of William F. Buckley Jr. Michael has subscribed to National Review for nearly 20 years… For the longest time NR was the sole source for conservative thought and reason… I actually learned of his passing when I visited Laura. Reading her brief post literally knocked the wind out of me. More from Laura here and here.

Frank Sinatra is one of my all time favorite singers. I'm envious of anyone that had an opportunity to see the Chairman of the Board perform in Las Vegas. Man, he was the coolest of cool. He and the rest of the Rat Pack made being in their 40's hip... Holding onto a cocktail, telling a joke, hanging with your buddies... and always in a suit...

Harold Arlen? You may know him as the guy who wrote the music to Somewhere Over the Rainbow... and Johnny Mercer? He wrote the lyrics to Satin Doll (Duke Ellington) and Moon River (Henry Mancini). Another time, another era of pop music...

Last weekend Michael and I were checking out the new library and we saw this Canadian Patriot... Had to take a pic for Wonder Woman... click on the photos for a larger look-see.

Well, I must vote for McCain-- the other options (the Clinton's or Obama) are NOT options for me. There are no Ronald Reagan's at the ready... I was never sold on Thompson--- he just never seemed to be in the fight... although he would have had my vote. Rudy... I would have voted for him despite his liberal tendencies... He would have been tough on terrorism and I would have enjoyed seeing him debate Hillary. I would have voted for Mitt... McCain will do what is right when it comes to our war against terrorism--- He will do right by our men and women in uniform... He will do right by the men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan...

We have nine more months of this...

I have been listening to a lot of Blues in recent weeks- especially Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I'm not certain if my need to listen to the Blues is because I want to wallow in self pity over the news and politics of the day or if it is just a wonderful way to escape the realities of day to day life... Either way, I found this gem of a video and it has some of the greats of blues guitar together on the same stage. I will assume you know who BB King, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck are. For you movie buffs of teenage angst drama... Albert Collins- The Ice Man was in Adventures in Babysitting back in the 80's-- "Nobody leaves this place without singing the blues..."

Now Buddy Guy is one of the all time greats... You have to check out the 2 videos below for Feels Like Rain... If you only have 5 more minutes of your life to give to this blog today... then check out Part 2--- Buddy leaves the stage and plays for the folks working their tales off in the kitchen then later has a pretty girl help him play... He has been around forever.... Whenever you see a history of rock n roll it inevitably will include a clip of Big Mama Thornton with Buddy playing guitar... Try to stay in a bad mood when the Blues are playing... try to not tap your foot... try not to move your head to the beat...

Song of the week: Stop Your Sobbing, The Pretenders

I think I was 16 when I heard the Pretenders for the first time. The song was Tatooed Love Boys and I thought it was the coolest song I had heard... it was edgy... and just under the punk movement radar... the best part.... the front man of the group was a chick... not just any chick... but a chick from Akron, Ohio... just up the highway-- a mere 3 hours away. See, when I was 16 you had 3 --- OK 4 camps for female artists--- Pat Benatar , Debbie Harry, Patty Smith and Chrissie Hynde. All were talented.... Vocally, Pat Benatar had the most talent and pop appeal. Patty Smith was one of the "founding fathers" of punk rock- but she was too raw... too self absorbed... too angry for my taste. Deborah Harry from Blondie was great... always gave the impression that she didn't care about anything... Blondie played at CBGB's.... a place I always wanted to go to but never made it there... Chrissie Hynde on the other hand was simply cool. She played guitar... she wrote.... she sang... she was the decision maker in the band. I admired her. I wanted to be her... and in my bedroom in front of the mirror, singing into my hairbrush... I WAS her.... When James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon both died from drug overdoses... I was pissed. The band had put out 2 albums and both were fantastic... Both are burned in my memory... I know them both cover to cover... Scott was wonderful and created some gorgeous music... idiots-- what a waste... Chrissie and Martin Chambers persevered and came out with Learning to Crawl my senior year in high school.... Back on the Chain Gang and My City was Gone (Rush Limbaugh's theme song). Too me though... there first two albums were the most resonant... Mystery Achievement, Kid, Private Life and this cover from The Kinks.... good stuff...

Ramble:

I was going to do a long rant on crying... but... it is getting late in the morning and I have a couple of projects I need to get moving on, so this will be short... Have you noticed how much more everyone is crying? While vegging in front of the television, flipping through the channels and stopping on any reality show, you will find yourself watching some poor sap burst into tears.... male- female- kid- doesn't matter... sooner or later... someone is going to be crying... Michael and I thought this would make a great drinking game... anytime someone cries... drink... the rules have been modified for Biggest Loser... you drink every time someone cries or you see a man boob....one drink per pair.... ew.

I'm the first to admit... I'm a baby... a sentimental sap.... I get teary eyed over a sweet commercial... I get all weepy when I think about my nieces and nephews and how quickly they are growing up... I cry at the playing of our National Anthem.... I weep when I think about the brave young men and women defending us against evil.... When did it become okay to cry in public? When did it become so easy for men to cry? I have seen my grandfather get teary eyed twice in my life.... once at the grave site of his little girl and once on my wedding day just as he was getting ready to walk me down the aisle... Maybe I am just "old school" and believe crying to be a private thing only to be exhibited in public on the rare occasion... I don't care who you are.... but if you are a parent... don't cry in front of your kid... You wanna freak a kid out? Be an adult and cry.... A kid needs the adult in the relationship to be the rock.... I remember seeing my mother cry once... she was so sad and I remember, I started crying too.... I was scared out of my mind... Stop crying...

You never saw Steve McQueen, or John Wayne or my beloved Yul Brynner cry... even when he had a lung removed and he knew he was dying....

I guess the icing on the cake was when I saw the footage of Hillary Clinton getting "emotional" about how concerned she is... Flashes of Susan Smith and her crocodile tears went racing through my mind... PLEASE NOTE: the comparison is CROCODILE TEARS nothing else...

I don't know... I just have to wonder how we are perceived as a nation.... a bunch of self absorbed cry babies consumed with self indulgent behavior and crying every time we don't get our way....
